They continued their journey west until they reached what is now Lackawanna Township on October 15th 1785 when they stopped for the night near present day's Spring Howard Middle School site. From this location they surveyed 2 miles wide plus 350 feet deep prospective land grants totaling 5 square miles which eventually became allantOWN borough due to its location adjacent to Lackawanna Township Line - thus giving rise to its current name! Upon arriving at their new settlement they named it after Captain John Armstrong himself - ALLENTOWN! They soon commenced building stocks/buildings such as barns/houses etc., some remain standing today including: The Old Post Office brick building dating back to 1840which may have been designed by Captain JohnArmstrong himself; The First Methodist Episcopal Church built c1846; Isaac Haas' Mansion also known as 'The Mansion'; First Presbyterian Church built c1847; Second Methodist Episcopal Church built 1865; Third Presbyterian Church built 1870 ¤t facility; Fourth Presbyterian Churches Built 1898-1901 & Current Facility). Many businesses were started during this early days such as Mr Holmes bakery(founded 1812); Mrs Holmes candy store(1815); Wirtz Hardware(established 1830); Masonic Lodge #1675(founded 1786); USS Constitution Museum& Naval History Museum Building footprints still extant inside museum)) These established businesses thrived until WWI when large scale industries began moving into town while employment dried up leaving many communities across America struggling economically during that difficult time period
