This device featured 8 knives that could be manipulated simultaneously with each hand while it was plugged into an outlet(Pietrangelo 1982). Additionally, Malatesta believed that this type of multitool would make detective work more efficient since it allowed them to deal with multiple suspects at once without feeling overwhelmed(Kemp2002). By 1950s most detective departments had adopted electronic multifunctionality within their investigative operations through handheld computers such as those used by LAPD officers(Baumgartner 2003) . As newer technologies became available however older systems continued to play a role in law enforcement such as those used by Customs agents who use ID tags attached directly to clothing(Walsh 2006; Chapple 2007) . Consequently, even though modern daymulti-tools have become increasingly sophisticated overall they retain some basic elements from their historic predecessors including simplicity of design/use coupled with increased functionality across different industries
