Allentown, PA is home to the world's second largest gun show, the Pennsylvania Gun Show. The event takes place every year in late October and early November and attractes exhibitors from all over the United States as well as from abroad. This year's event will be held on October 30-31, 2017 at the Allentown Marriott Resort & Spa. The Pennsylvania Gun Show was founded in 1903 by Colonel John Denny of Reading, PA. At its inception, the show was an important stepping stone for firearms dealers and shooters across Pennsylvania. It served as a proving ground for new products and technologies and helped to develop a strong industry here in Allentown. In 1980, the now defunct Keystone Exposition brought together firearms manufacturers from around the country at this parkland resort near Philadelphia. The show attracted an estimated 2 million visitors over four days! Today, the Pennsylvania Gun Show remains one of America's most popular events with exhibitors representing all types of shooting enthusiasts. Allentown is a small town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. Allentown is the county seat of Lehigh County and part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Allentown was Nicholas Slocum in 1784. In 1837, Bethlehem's Second Bank became one of the first banks west of the Allegheny Mountains to accept American currency. In 1848, Allentown became an incorporated village when its TH eelderly men met to create a government for their aged society. This society functioned as a model for later municipal governments throughout Pennsylvania. On July 1, 1861, following the American Civil War, Union General James Longstreet ordered his division commander Horace Greeley to move Confederate forces from Monmouth Junction northward along West Street into central Allentown and attack on Municipal Hall Depot (now Old Main Gymnasium). After hours of fighting and several casualties on both sides - including three killed by Confederate gunfire - Greeley ordered his division commanders to withdraw and allowed Union forces under Brigadier General John Pemberton to surround and rout the enemy force at Mill Run Park before returning to Monmouth Junction. Allentown residents were quick to celebrate their new cityhood by erecting two large granite obelisks that still stand today as symbolizing their city's strength as well as its love of independence; one facing east and one facing west across Market Square – these obelisks remain today even though they are no longer used for civic ceremonies or public displays; instead they serve as artworks located inside Old Main Gymnasium between First Avenue North (the business district) and Second Avenue South (the university district). The second obelisk was dedicated on December 15th 1870 by then Mayor Michael Nelligan after which all business licenses were issued from City Hall until that time through City Treasurer Edward McGinley. On this date also flourishes an annual event entitled "The Christmas Tree" which takes place at Community Center located just south of Market Square near where present-day Third Street meets Fourth Avenue where many local merchants participate with stockings full of candy canes distributed among them during December 25th each year! In 1892 Samuel Morse donated land towards construction of what would become Penn Station which helped promote further growth in Allentown during that decade due largely to increased rail traffic accompanying manufacturer Andrew Mellon's dreams for a northern terminus for America's great industrial cities –Penn Station would eventually become home to some $160 million worth of businesses Centerpoint Airlines Inc., Wernher Hogg & Co., Verizon Communications Inc., Google LLC., HSBC Holdings Plc., Comcast NBCUniversal Networks II etc.) .As more people came into town all types of businesses sprouted up: millinery stores such as Lillie Maloney & Company who had been operating since 1887; grocery store Jardine Bros.; electrician Bechtel; druggist Barnes & Noble; shoe store Corning Glass Workshops Ltd.; saddlery shop Woodward Brothers Shoes Ltd.; cigar shops Havana Cigars CO.; barber shop Harry Burtz Barber Shop (later renamed Harrys Barber Shop); livery stable Horseheads Livery Grounds LTD.; ice cream parlor Dairy Queen ; Theatre District featuring movie theaters RKO Radio Pictures Corporation etc..Many homes were erected around this time including those now occupied by Village President’s Palace Hotel Ballroom restaurant Masonic Temple Nofaloco Lodge Nofaloco Grange Play House Masonic Temple Mrs Samiels Department Store Fidelity National Bank Of America Headquaters

This economic boom continued through World War II until Allied bombing destroyed much of downtown Allentown in 1945.
