In 1838, the town of Reading was incorporated as an independent township within Adams County. That same year, Reading merged with nearby Dunmore to form what would become known as "the three Towns." In 1861, when Pennsylvanian statehood was granted to Pennsylvania, Allentown became one of six cities located in western Pennsylvania along with Pittsburgh (state capital), Scranton (the largest city then located in western PA), Wilkes-Barre (now Hazleton), Erie (centered around Detroit) and Erie Falls (near Niagara Falls). In 1911–12 all but two streets were paved throughout downtown Allentown with asphalt being first used on Main Street on December 5th that year by Mayor John Fenton who had come up with the idea while campaigning for office. By 1913 most business districts had been widened into boulevards running east-west through downtown followed by side streets which made access to most businesses difficult if not impossible without leaving downtown open to vehicular traffic only during certain hours or during special events such as carnivals or fairs which drew large crowds. During World War I all production within reach outside Bethlehem moved inland where anthracite coalmining operations were established such as those at Monessen near Uniontown while steel production took place at Steel City near Homestead along with other heavy industry like shipbuilding at Kingston upon Hull beside munitions plants just outside Clearfield also located on what is now State Route 621 between Westminster and Meadville

Allentown was founded as a small trading post on the Monongahela River by English settlers in 1763. For many years it functioned as an important transportation junction for goods arriving from Great Britain and America via the Ohio River and then to points southward. In 1802, Allentown became a chartered town under the name Newton Township. In 1834, it merged with neighboring Scranton to form what is now known as Scranton/Allentown Township). The merger resulted in greater economic development because Scranton had long been an important manufacturing center for items such as textiles, shoes, soap opera scripts and other products exported to Europe. The first building in Allentown was built in 1763 when traders established their trading post on the Monongahela River near present-day East Market Street and Northampton Avenue. At that time there were no roads or sidewalks within all of what is now downtown Allentown so traders transported their goods overland across open fields along today's Penn Square Boulevard until they reached their destination by boat or wagon - either upriver to Altoona (now point Park) or downriver to Buffalo (now Buffalo Creek). The early days of Allentown were difficult due to lack of resources but thanks to hard work byavers like David Hackett and others who mined coal at nearby Mount Carmel Cemetery during this time period, businesses flourished including milling woolen fabric for export back home through packers like John Stephenson; produce from local gardens such as apples being sold at markets throughout Western Pennsylvania; construction of new churches; establishment of stagecoach routes between New York City and Lancaster via Bethlehem; general store/Post Office which remain extant today

In 1834, Allentown became one of the original 72 counties in Pennsylvania. In 1876, it became the fourth largest city in Pennsylvania with a population over 100,000 people. In 1916–1917 all credit cards were accepted at local merchants which helped spur economic development and make Allentown an early center for technology innovation thanks to its location within easy reach of major companies like GEICO and Sears Roebuck & Co..
