Allentown is a city in southern Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 34,845 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Lehigh County after Bethlehem. The first gun barrels were made in Allentown by locally made oak barrels which were then filled with tar and shot to make them harder and more durable than ordinary barrel hoops. These guns were used for hunting and target shooting until the early 1800s when rifles became more popular and became easier to purchase. Gun barrels began being manufactured outside of Allentown altogether by 1827 when Nicholas Dwyer of Newtown, Connecticut started making barrels for his father’s rifle manufacturing business in town. This continued until 1892 when John Witherspoon patented the principle of using a pressurized gas cylinder to create a hard outer casing around an inner core of softwood which would resist splitting or warping during firing. These cannons also eventually proved themselves very effective against Native Americans who had been raiding settlements since prehistory. One such engagement happened on October 8, 1757 when 25 Cherokee Indians attacked a small white settlement at Loughran near present-day Reading Borough. After taking many casualties from what must have been some very well-armed firearms, the Cherokee decided not to pursue further and simply withdrew back into their customary tribal territory

In 1714, Colonel Robert Morris founded Morristown Academy which became Brown University (now Brown University) and eventually became part of Pennsylvania State University (now Penn State). In 1821, General George Washington granted township status to all of Lehigh County except for Bethlehem which had been exempted by Act of Congress that year. On January 1, 1825, Mechanicsville Township was created from parts of Mechanicsburg Township and Dunmore Township with an enrollment of 577 residents; Mechanicsburg had been part of Lebanon Borough since 1786. On October 20th 1829 Allentown became a borough with 707 residents when Lebanon Borough voted to merger with AllentowtOWN due to lack of annexation requests from other municipalities On February 14th 1860 Anthony Guglielmo Marconi successfully transmitted his first wireless message from Bridgeport to Reedsburg On December 12th 1888 coal mine disaster occurred at nearby Monmouth Coal Mine that killed 28 men including James Fenton who operated the mine singlehandedly
