Brown's map of 1802 showed that alluvial soil lay between the rivers Susquehanna and Monongahela, making it possible to build mills on these waterways. The first mill in history was built by James Moriarty on Fourth Street in 1814; this mill became known as "Moriarty's Mill". In 1829, George Stephenson erected his own machine shop on Main Street (now Court Square) to produce locomotives for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company (PRR). At this time, Allentown was one of only three towns in Pennsylvania with its own railroad system; the others were Eriecliff and Scranton. Allentown is a city in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. Allentown is the second largest city in Lackawanna County after Scranton. It is also the fifth largest city in Pennsylvania. The first mention of Allentown occurs in 1681 when John Montresor mentioned "a small town called Allenton" and its inhabitants were "the Indians." The first settler to arrive in what is now Allentown was Nicholas Negrete who arrived around 1740. In 1745, Colonel George Washington's army passed through on their way from Bethlehem to Philadelphia and stopped at Negrete's house for dinner. This event is commemorated by an inscription on the building which still stands today (now part of Alumni Hall). During the American Revolution, General George Washington's forces camped near Negrete's farmstead on July 12th – 13th,1775 while encamped at Monmouth Junction between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. A Badge of Honor recognizing this fact has been preserved as part of the collection of the Delaware Valley Historical Society located in Seminary Township, northeast of Downtown Allentown. It was during this time that General Washington met Nicholas Negrete who became his friend and business partner; they would remain so untilNegrete's death in 1798. After America gained independence from Great Britain, General Washington ordered all British subjects living within U.S./Lackawanna County to leave by order dated December 15th 1814 which applied equally to both men or women but specifically to Native Americans living within our borders without any compensation being given them either then or since then - governments have never made good on their promises! In 1827 Samuel Morse set up a Telegraph Line between Philadelphia and Baltimore with his brother Alfred Vail providing relay service including Allentown; this line was later extended northwestward under charter authority granted by Governor John Beall along with other townships into Susquehannah Township before finally terminating at Niagara Falls just south of Buffalo NY! In 1837 James Fenton organized a mining community called Easton where he built a gristmill and started extracting coal from local hillsides; however due to bad weather conditions company officials abandoned their claim early in 1840 permitting development only by those who could afford it notching up prices high enough for new investors to take hold despite competition from nearby anthracite coal mines . By 1850 there were over 1,000 people working at Fenton’s mine along with 50 houses although much infrastructure had not yet been put into place such as roads (today’s northbound Interstate 81 runs parallel to Fenton Street) . Coal production declined beginning around 1860 but resumed several years later following construction of large open-air workshops known as “Fenton Factories” situated just outside downtown allenwood buildings until its closure circa 1930 due mainly to World War II military spending priorities followed by economic decline However recent excavations have discovered artifacts dating back more than 800 years old making this one of Pennsylvanian history’s longest running continuously inhabited settlements !
