Allentown was founded in 1754 by John Allens and was originally known as "Allegany Township." The name change came about because the original land grant for the town was given to John Allen, a member of the Scottish militia. In 1768, Allentown became part of Pennsylvania and its first governor, George Washington, visited the town. The early settlers in Allentown included men from Scotland, England, Ireland and New York. Many of these people were attracted to what they saw as a fertile farming area with ample access to water resources. The growth of the city began in 1825 when traders and others moving westward found new opportunities in what had been an agricultural community. By 1830, Allentown had become one of Pennsylvania's largest cities with over 50 buildings. In 1848, during the American Civil War, many residents turned their backs on slavery and joined forces with General Robert E. Lee against Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant. This event is traditionally considered to be the beginning of the end for slavery in America. After Lincoln's victory at Gettysburg Address in November 1865, attitudes began to change among some allentownians toward abolitionism. In 1870, construction began on what would become Penn Station which served as an important transportation hub for eastern Pennsylvania during this time period
