The growth of industries throughout the early 20th century slowed but did not stop Allentown from experiencing significant growth during World War II when industry boomed due to military production requirements; five plants were established here producing tanks, ammunition boxes and other items needed for war effort including Alcoa’s aluminum works at 1515 Centre Street; PPG’s oil refinery at 2200 Main Street; Gossamer Gear Works at 1400 Wyoming Avenue alsoproducing items needed for war effort; all these companies closed after 1945 but left their legacy behind in various forms such as Alcoa building #1 now housing offices used by Luers Corporation while Gossamer Gear Works building remains vacant today housed by SCI International until recently when it leased space from aircraft manufacturer Pittman- King Enterprises Incorporated sitting on top of an old gas station building currently being used as office/residential space In recent years Many new businesses have sprung up like "Leeds Bakery" PCA Hair Salon (opened December 1st 2009), "Noodle House" Chinese Restaurant (opened October 12th 2009) "Gabby's Bakery" Pizza Place (October 6th 2009), "Brewster's Coffee Company" Cafe(formerly Starbucks) (opened September 10th2009), "Karen's Flowers" Florists(opened August 5th 2009) cocktail lounge called "'Ziggy' Lounge", ice cream parlor - Palazzo Ice Cream(opening July 9th2009) ect...the list goes on! One thing that hasn't changed much since 2007 when 'Karen's Flowers' reopened is the extensive use of local artisanship to decorate every inch of every shop! This extends to exterior painting/decorating also done throughout each shop!"
