Aliquippa's growth continued through World War II with heavy industry including aluminum smelting and shipbuilding; however, recently there has been little development except for some new housing developments which are slowly becoming more prevalent throughout the community due to increasing job opportunities withinPittsburgh or nearby cities such as Erie and Johnstown. In recent years there has been a significant amount of redevelopment taking place around town center including plans for an expressway (the route now known as I-376) to be built through town boundaries as well as new housing developments along Summit Avenue which have brought much needed life back into what had once been a largely abandoned community
