In 1768, when Huntingdon County was created out of central Pennsylvania, Aliquippa became one of its townships. However, it only gained full municipal status within Hunterdon County in 1800 after successfully lobbying for this change from tribal land to county jurisdiction. During much of the 19th century,Alquippa remained an isolated frontier community with limited access to amenities or education. However, over time it has become an important cultural and economic center in central Pennsylvania due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its rich natural resources. A number of significant events took place at AlquIPPaa during this time including: 1812 - The Battle of Gettysburg began here as American soldiers fought against Confederate forces led by General Robert E Lee following Ulysses S Grant's victory at Monmouth Court House in New Jersey; 1861 - John F Kennedy accepted his assassinated brother Joseph's challenge for President against Abraham Lincoln; 1937-1945 - World War II saw heavy bombardment by American military forces here including raids into German-occupied territory; 1992-1999 - The United States military operated two airfields located near downtown AlquIPPaa during Operation Desert Storm;

The area now known as Aliquippa was part of the Northwest Territory of Pennsylvania until 1776, when it became part of the United States. In 1821, Aliquippa was incorporated as a borough.
