Burnside Jr., later took over management of Woodburn after George's death in 1861. The townsite had two stores when it was platted; one by John C. burnside Jr., the other by Elisha Cook (1813-1893). In 1865, John C. burnside III organized the first water system for Lane County with horses drawn wagons from Sunnyside to serve both townsites together until 1893 when an electric wire became available to all residents
In 1855, the first post office in Woodburn was established. In 1860, the first store opened in town. The first school was founded in 1861 and the first church was founded in 1865.
