It led to many people coming here – both original settlers and later newcomers – because of its advantages: its location; its friendly community atmosphere; and its easy access to everything that Woodburn had to offer. The first inhabitants of Woodburn were actually two groups of Finnish immigrants who came overLAND from Sweden just prior TO THE FIRST AMERICAN OPENING OF WEST VIRGINIA IN 1853! This event marked an important change not only because American Indians had finally been given permission by Ulysses S Grantto purchase land east of the Cascade Mountains (the so-called “Oregon Country”), but also because these settlers answered MAGNIFICENTLYto ELIZABETH WHITNEY’S CALL FOR A FEMALE COUNCIL TO HELP HER PROVIDE LAW AND ORDER IN THE NEW WEST VIRGINIA! The town of Woodburn was founded in 1857 by Capt. John Wesley Hardin and his family. The town grew slowly until it exploded in growth during the late 1800s, thanks to the arrival of the Oregon Trail and the gold Rush. The towns first store was built in 1859, and the first school was opened in 1861. By 1870, Woodburn had a population of over 100 people and had erected a wooden courthouse and jail. The town's growth continued into the early 21st century as it became an important center for trade along the Oregon Trail. In 1922, Woodburn hosted its first annual fair which attracted more than 500 participants from across Oregon. The fairgrounds remain popular today and are used for various events throughout the year.
