Woodburn is a city in Oregon, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Wallowa County and was named for General James K. Woodbury after he defeated an Indian uprising there in 1847. The first white people to visit what is now Woodburn were traders from the east coast of America in the early 1800s. In 1828, Lt. George Vancouver explored the area and named it Saintsville after his ship, HMS Discovery had anchored off shore that day. A post office called Woodburn was established in 1837, and it remained so until 1907 when it became part of Oregon City. The city acquired its current name on July 1, 1907 via resolution of the Oregon Legislature following a vote by residents to honor General James K. Woodbury for his victory over Native Americans at Siuslaw River Bridge near present-day Wallowa County Fairgrounds on July 4, 1847 which signaled end to Indian wars in Oregon Territory
In 1853, John C. Fremont exploring the Oregon Trail discovered what would become Woodburn. The town was founded by Captain George Woodburn in 1855 and named after him. In 1915, it became a city and has since grown to over 100,000 residents.
