Woodburn is a town in Lane County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,971 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1851 by John James Audubon and named for him. The first settler in what is now Woodburn was Captain James Cook, who explored the Columbia River area in 1792. He landed on the present-day site of Woodburn on July 14, 1792, during his third voyage along the Northwest Passage from China to North America. Cook's party of 20 men and women werethe only Europeans to set foot on Oregon Island (now Ayres Island) until 1846 when Jedediah Smith discovered Mount Adams and named it after himself. In 1851, John James Audubon came to Oregon as part of a group of fur traders led by Humboldt County Sheriff David Silliman. Audubon had been inspired to explore the Umpqua Valley by looking at a painting of Mount Hood that he saw while surveying the Willamette Valley for Silliman's cattle company. In 1865, Pacific Telegraph Company built its line between Salem and Portland through what is now Prairie du Chien. This new transportation infrastructure allowed settlers to begin moving into what is today Woodburn because they could get goods upriver fast enough to avoid having them delivered by boat or wagon
The first post office in Woodburn was opened on November 2, 1885. The town's first store was built on the corner of Seventh and First Streets.
