Gun slings, also known as gun slingshots, were a popular and common form of shooting in the late 19th century. They consisted of a long, flexible tube made from some type of cloth or leather that was stretched over a person's back or chest and then fastened to the ground with a belt or strap. The shooter would use the sling to shoot arrows or other projectiles at targets located far away. The popularity ofgun slingsarounds outmoded any attempt by first-time shooters to learn how to fire an arrow effectively. Even experienced archers soon learned that it took more than one shot to kill an animal, so efficient firing practices became critical for successful hunting expeditions. Gunslings allowed anyone with some experience to participate in hunts without becoming overwhelmed by the task of trying to accurate shoot an animal at distances up to 100 yards (91 m). As early as 1892, several people had patents filed for designs for "gun slings" that could be used both indoors and outdoors. In 1913, Woodburn resident John Haddock began manufacturing his own versions of gun slings using materials he had lying around his home including cotton twine and paperclips. Haddock's invention eventually became known as the "Haddock Slings." The design quickly caught on among amateur shooters and hunters throughout Oregon, Nevada, and California; Universal Slings manufactured their own version in 1915 based on Haddock's design. Gun slings continued to be popular into the 21st century even though they have been replaced by modern methods such as airguns and bowsights

Woodburn is a small town in Oregon, located on the banks of the Willamette River. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Eugene-Springfield, OR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by early settlers in 1846 and named for General James Woodburn, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a U.S. lieutenant colonel. In 1875, Woodburn became the site of what would become one of Oregon's most famous logging towns, with sawmills and mills dotting its landscape until they closed in the 1960s. Today, Woodburn retains a strong agricultural tradition with crops such as hay and cotton being grown on its many acres of land.

In 1847, the town of Woodburn was founded in Oregon by Capt. James K. Polk and his wife Julia. The town has been a vital part of the community since its establishment. Today, Woodburn is a vibrant and growing community with rich history. Woodburn was named after James K. Polk because he had conducted an exploratory survey of the area in 1845-46 while exploring Oregon for Congress as part of President John Quincy Adams's American Exploring Expedition. Mrs. Polk donated land to help found the town and platted it out on December 15th, 1847- almost one year after Captain Polk's death at the Battle of Buena Vista Ridge during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The first settler in Woodburn were Abram Golladay and his family who arrived from Illinois on July 10th, 1848; they were followed by Samuel Morse who arrived on October 3rd, 1849; Emory Wickerham arrived November 17th, 1850; John Fenton arriving December 11th, 1850; and George Hinton arriving January 25th, 1851. The final group to arrive were Levi Coffin and his family on April 6th, 1861. Wealthy citizens from around Oregon traveled to Woodburn to observe what life would be like as a new settlement in this rural area located about 120 miles northwest of Portland along Interstate 5 near Burns County Line Road (later State Route 99). One such observer was Reverend John Greenleaf Whittier who wrote: "It is hard work travelling any great distance so soon after leaving home...I have never seen anything more wild or picturesque than these hills which rise up before me." A post office was established at Woodburn on May 16th, 1850 under the name Butte Creek post office due to population growth within the small town caused by lumbering activity which occurred nearby including sawmills operated by Daniel Boone & Sons lumbering company that harvested logs along North Bend Road northwest of town limits between 1865-68 when that road became US 97 (today's SR 99). The first mail carried from Butte Creek via wagon into Wood Burnett began arriving on October 4th, 1852 when Elisha Scudder sent two barrels packed with mail from New York City via stagecoach overnighter bound for Portland stopping at Butte Creek en route

In 1916, Woodburn incorporated as a city. During World War II, Woodburn became one of the largest American cities to participate in the war effort with its large production of munitions and military equipment. After the war, Woodburn struggled economically but regained its former status as a major center for business and industry. In the early 21st century,woodburn has experienced significant growth as a result of new development in eastern Oregon and neighboring states.
