Woodburn, Oregon is a town in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Woodburn were the Whitman Expedition of 1847-48. They found the area rich in coal and timber and named it after General George Custer's great-uncle, Major James K. Polk (1814-1892). In 1855, the U.S. government built Fort Hall on an island in Bull Island Lake that was then known as Snake Island because it lay between Bull Island and Fort Hall. In 1865, the fort was moved to its current site on what is now Duck Creek Road near where it remains today. In 1870, a post office called "Moses" was established at Duck Creek; this name lasted until 1906 when it changed to "Woodburn". The arrival of Daylight Saving Time in 1895 caused many people to change their daylight saving times from summer time to winter time so they could get an extra day off each year. As a result of this change, most residents of Woodburn switched from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time in 1912. The post office kept changing its name until 1923 when it became "Woodburn". The first school in Woodburn was opened in 1907 by Mrs. Ethel Hutton with students coming from nearby Sistersville and Grants Pass schools which had been opened two years earlier by Mrs. Anna Elder Cooksides and her husband Atherton Cooksides Jr.. The first teacher at grades one through six taught using a desk rather than chairs because there wasn't enough space for them at either of the other schools' buildings! In 1911 Mrs supplied desks for all grades but one due to budget constraints so that both high school students and elementary students could learn together! In 1918 Drusilla McFarlane started teaching grade seven with three children per classroom which gave rise to the term 'Familieschooling' later used more often about community education programs throughout Oregon! By 1930 there were thirty familieschooling classes totaling ninety five kids plus parents/guardians during morning hours only! This type of programming continued into the 1990s when online learning became available!! Today over one thousand children participate through home schooling opportunities offered by local public school districts!!!
