By 1890, it had become home to over 10,000 residents and boasted one of the largest libraries west of Mexico City. In 1907-1908, Money magazine ranked Wood Burnett #1 among U.S." small" cities for economic vitality (based on population size). In 1916-17 Woodward Library celebrated its centennial season with a series of celebrations including an Oratorio Competition sponsored by Willamette University; local concerts by members of the First Baptist Church led by conductor Julius Weidner; literature readings from various library staff members; an auction featuring refreshments from businesses within walking distance from Woodward Library; and support services for local schoolssponsored by Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) chapters throughout Oregon that summer evening.
