In 1862, Woodburn born a town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. It was founded by fur traders on the edge of the Cascade Mountains and soon became an important commercial center. The town's first gunsmith, George A. Smith, made pistols and rifles for settlers and Native Americans. Around 1875, Smith started making hats with his own mill from materials he had acquired from local farmers. By 1889, Smith's hat company had become one of the largest hat companies in Oregon. The early firearms enthusiasts in Woodburn were mostly men who enjoyed shooting sports or target practice. As time passed and more people began to purchase handguns for self-defense, gunsmiths also began to produce pistols and rifles that could be used as shotguns as well. Woodburn is located in Oregon, within the Wallowa-Weminuche County School District. The population was 2,834 as of the 2010 census. The town is named for General James K. Woodburn, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a U.S. Marshal in Oregon from 1877 to 1881. The first permanent settler in what would become Woodburn was Isaac Parkman in 1864. Parkman had come to the area looking for land to farm and found a tract of land that he offered for sale to John Sibley on October 17 of that year. On November 7th,1865, Sibley sold his share of the land to Atherton Witherspoon and George Hance with instructions not to till or use it until they could find another buyer who would do so officially. Atherton Witherspoon did not live long enough to see his part in developing Woodburn; he died on February 15th, 1865 at the age of 73 years old while still living on the property which he had just acquired from Sibley. In 1870, Atherton's son Augustus organized a group of men known as "The Pioneer Legion" which intended to take over control of all aspects of life in what would later become Woodburn including education and governance within their own village - something that seems almost unheard of today given how everything has changed since then! They failed however due largely because there were too few able bodied men available willing/able to participate vigorously in such an endeavor! On January 8th, 1871 Greenough platted out section 10 (later section 12)square miles eastward along Hood Creek where he erected a cabin some 20 feet by 20 feet with room for five people inside and used it as a storeroom until lumber started coming downriver through Hood River Gorge making transport much easier than it ever had before! This new development led directly into future commercial aspirations when early entrepreneurs realized that this region had potential far beyond simply producing goods necessary for everyday needs like flour and potatoes! It wasn't until 1886 when Edward Fenton established himself here at 539 East Main Street - one block southeast from Greenough's original cabin - when things really took off! For Fenton, this was essentially his commercial home away from home: here he bought & sold goods up river including flour & meat products; built houses; ran a mill; etc... All during this time period we can hear stories about him being followed by mounted police because if you didn't have your product(s) ready for market day you risked getting sued...or worse!
