In 1865, a rail line was completed from New York City to Portland via Oregon City. This increased traffic on the river and made it easier for people to get around without going through Seattle or Vancouver. The first post office in Oregon was established at Westport in 1850; it closed in 1853 because of low mail rates. The first store opened in Oregon City in 1861; it closed in 1870 because of low sales prices. In 1865, Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a transcontinental railroad through Nevada Territory; this decision led to increased traffic on the Columbia River and helped make Oregon more economically significant than California during this time period. In 1875, a bridge over Hood Canal linking eastern Washington state with western Oregon was completed; this event madeOregon more accessible to travelers throughout much of Silicon Valley as well as parts of Puget Sound region
