The first human habitation in Wilsonville may have been those who founded the city on the Willamette River about 1855. In 1863, James W. Cook and his brother John founded a small logging operation in what is now downtown Wilsonville. According to legend, when Captain Eugene Deasy of the Umatilla Expedition discovered the timber resources of Multnomah County in 1864 while exploring for gold near present-dayGWK State Park, he asked one of his men where he could find "a little place called Wilsonville." Deasy's friends and fellow miners helped him name and found the town on March 3, 1865; it was named after General William Tecumseh Sherman's headquarters east of Portland during that battle that year. The lumber industry soon gave way to other economic pursuits in Wilsonville; sawmills operated from1868 until 1925; papermaking began operations around 1880; machine shops opened up during World War I and again between 1940 and 1945; beer brewing began operations in 1941; post office service started on July 5, 1916 (the date still commemorates local pioneer James Aiken); and auto parts manufacturing started up around 1950s. The following year, Wilsonville became the site of the Union Pacific Railroad's first junction west of the Rocky Mountains. The railroad helped to spur growth in Wilsonville and other nearby communities during the early years of Oregon's statehood. In 1876, Wilsonville was annexed by Portland; however, it retained its independent streak until 1912 when it merged withPortland's adjacent city, Burnside to form one large city named after both Portlanders - Portland-Burnside.

Here's a quick overview of how bolt action rifles work: you cock the hammer on the rifle's firing pin to fire the round. The bolt moves in its travel, pushing the round into the chamber and out of the gun. This is done by two mechanisms: an extractor (on the left side of the rifle) pullsthe round out of the chamber and into your hands, while a non-extracting rod holds back the case until it can be taken from behind by an extractionist (usually on your right). When you fired your first shot with a bolt action rifle, some powder was already in that cartridge case waiting to be used up by your firearm's ignition system. That powder would then ignite with whatever kind of primer you had selected (primerless rounds often work just fine), setting off all those explosives that make up a bullet! If you were unlucky enough to have one of those "bad" primers in your magazine - well... let's just say it didn't go well for you!
