There has been a rifle scope industry in the United States for over 100 years. Rifle scopes have a variety of applications, from hunting to target shooting. Wilsonville was settled in 1847 by John and Ellen Wilson. The first post office was established in 1849, and the first store was opened in 1851. In 1865, the Wilson family donated land to the town for a school, which became a public school in 1868. The Wilson family also donated money to erect a courthouse and jail. The town started trading arts and crafts with nearby Salem during the early 1800s. By 1893, there were nine stores, twelve businesses, two churches, one school and seventy-six residents. Wilsonville experienced economic prosperity during World War II until its citizens were displaced by Japanese Americans living in Oregon City. After the war, Wilsonville lost some of its status as an agricultural center due to changes in production patterns within Oregon; however, it has since regained some of its former wealth through tourism and agriculture."
