On October 1, 1850, Wilsonville became the county seat of Lincoln County when it was organized from part of Clackamas County. The population reached 569 in 1860 and 711 in 1870; however, because of heavy wagon traffic and an increasing population along the Oregon Trail, Wilsonville's growth slowed down until after World War I when it started to increase again due to available land and new housing developments near the railroad depot.
