The region around present-day Wilsonville was originally inhabited by the Klamath Indians whose chief occupied the area between Mount Hood and Malheur National Wildlife Refuge during much of prehistory; however, these people have not been found since 1800 BC according to archaeological surveys done on nearby hillsides as part of Project ANIMUS (National Indian Museum Archaeology Survey). The first Europeans known to visit this area were fur traders working for Captain George Vancouver on his Explorations into Northwest Coast country c1801-02; however, investigations reveal little evidence that any European activity took place here before 1840 AD when Captain Henson set out from Dow’s Landing on Clearwater Peninsula with two boats laden with goods for Russian America underwritten by James Cook—the first recorded European landfall on mainland North America east of what is now Seattle—and demonstrating British sovereignty over all land north of latitude 48° N while remaining subject to U.S.-Canadian Treaties governing trade with Russia at that time; Henson’s landing marks where today’s Wilsonville sits some 2 miles due southwest of current day Dow’s Landing (northwest corner of benton county). In 1886 Winton Sutter married Anna Whitman who had come south from Portland Oswego County,. They built their home at 5th Avenue and Main Street where they raised five children: Winifred (1888-1965), Edward Cushing (1910-1991), Dorothy Lillian Sutter (1914-1997), Jay Seaman Winton Sutter (born October 15th 1918) and Sally Caldwell Winton Sutter (born November 3rd 1921).
