Wilsonville was founded in 1848 by the brothers Will and Jesse Wilson. The first post office in the town was established in 1850, and it continued to be operated until 1893. In 1855, the Wilson family moved from their original home on the north side of town to a large farm on the east side. Over time, many other families also settled in Wilsonville, including the Smiths, Browns, and Byrds. The town grew rapidly due to its location near logging camps and lumberyards that were located along the Willamette River. By 1860, Wilsonville had a population of around 200 people. The town's growth accelerated after Oregon became an all-white state in 1861. White residents started moving into Wilsonville starting in 1865, and by 1870 it had become an overwhelmingly white community with only a few black residents. In 1877, local businessman George Tilton donated land to build a new school complex called Tilton School House. The school was built on what is now Oregon Street withinWilsonville limits. The school remained open until 1942 when it was closed due to World War II restrictions on education opportunities for Japanese Americans living in Oregon. After World War II ended, many Japanese American veterans returned to Wilsonville and began rebuilding their lives following Japan's surrender at Hiroshima on August 6th 1945. Many of these veterans started businesses or opened up their own stores within Wilsonville as they rebuilt their lives back home after years of confinement inside concentration camps during World War II
