Warne served as its first president and helped grow Wilsonville into an important center for Freemasonry in Oregon. In 1917, war veteran Angus MacDonald opened MacDonald's Department Store in downtown Wilsonville; it later became known as MacDonald's General Store after Angus MacDonalds death in 1951. During World War II, Davis Guggenheim recruited workers to work at his paper manufacturing plant near Portland; manyWilsonvillians chose to fight rather than return home during World War II because they knew their families would not be able to survive without them once hostilities ended.
