The name "Wilsonville" was given to the town by Captain James A. Wilson who, in 1846, founded what would become Benton County. The community was originally called Cloudy Springs after a spring that lay within its borders. In 1868, the post office was renamed to honor General Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia Lawless Grant (née Thornton). The Grants were influential figures in Oregon during the late 19th century and their home at Cloudy Springs became one of Wilsonville's most popular tourist attractions. In 1901, local farmers began growing wheat on an 8-acre plot they had bought from President William McKinley for $1 per acre. By 1907, when Prohibition made alcoholic drinks illegal in Oregon, Wilsonville had become known as "the Wheat City". At that time there were only 10 businesses in town with a total payroll of $100,000. Today, Wilsonville is home to over 100 businesses with a payroll greater than $1 million and its citizens are known for their entrepreneurial spirit and love of growth opportunities. Wilsonville has always been an important center for trade with its location close to both Interstate 5 and Interstate 97 which connect it with other parts of Central Oregon. Over 100 businesses operate here including grocery stores, restaurants, clothiers and more. There are also several professional schools located here including two universities: Pacific University School of Business & Economics and Whitman College School of Health Science & Education

By 1882, however, Wilsonville had only two churches and seventy-five citizens. During this time period, other towns in nearby counties such as Salem were starting to grow rapidly too so Wilsonville experienced rapid decline in popularity over time until it reached its current level of population around 1920. The post office opened in 1886 and remained open until 1957; during that time it was located at 1113 NW Broadway (now called NE First Ave.). That same year saw the start of what would become an important facet of Wilsonville history – its own agricultural industry which would continue to play a significant role in the town’s development into today. A large cotton plantation operated by James Fenton came onto the scene soon after and began producing much needed goods for local residents along with exporting their products all over western Oregon; this boosted Wilsonvilie’s economy significantly throughout much of the 20th century. One important aspect that has helped keep Wilsonville afloat throughout its many years has been its excellent education system which continues to provide quality programs for locals as well as tourists alike; one example is The University of Portland’s School of Veterinary Medicine which has been providing high-quality veterinary services to residents since 1969! Additionally, many businesses have also thrived withinWilsonvilie over time including several restaurants/stores/cafes as well as retail stores like Sears and JCPenney which continue to thrive even though they no longer directly operate within town limits (although some still do). However, during the war years Wilsonville's economy went into decline with few new businesses coming online. After the war ended, Grants Pass began to experience significant economic revitalization thanks to new investment from developers and entrepreneurs including Neil Armstrong who founded Armstrong Motorsports Ventures Inc., one of Oregon's largest automotive companies at that time. In recent years, Grants Pass has seen increasing development interest due to its unique location within Oregon's wine country and its potential for becoming a major tourist destination for wine lovers across North America. As a result of this growth, Grants Pass has become one of Portland's most popular tourist destinations and is home to some of Oregon’s most high-end restaurants as well as numerous cultural attractions such as Mount Hood National Forest which offers hiking opportunities as well as beautiful scenery throughout its day/night cycle).
