Wilsonville is a small town in the Malheur National Forest, about 20 miles due north of Burns, Oregon. It was founded in 1883 by John Wesley Smith and his family. The population was 546 at the 2000 census. The first settlers were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1883. They built a log cabin and established a school in what is now the town center. In 1906, the Oregon Legislature passes an act granting land to the town for development. The town was platted on July 12, 1912 and named after General James K. Over time, many other businesses have opened including banks (First National Bank & Trust Company 1960-1981; Citizens National Bank 1966-1998), restaurants (Buca di Beppo 1965-2008; Big Buffaloes Pizza 1967-2009), pharmacies (Parrish Drug Store Ltd.), health care facilities (Oregon Health Authority 1989-1996; Kaiser Permanente 1994-) and retail stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JW's Hardware, A&H Weigh Scales and Wagon Wheel Hardware among others . One possible explanation for this growth is that Wilsonville has been located near some very important government installations such as Air Force Base Lewisburg and Umpqua Arsenal where Defense Department contracts are carried out. These locations have also created opportunities for local businesspeople to serve their community by providing services such as security or janitorial work for these establishments

Wilsonville, Oregon is a town located in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from General James A. Wilson who served as lieutenant general during World War I and later became US Minister to Great Britain. In 1868, George H. Smith opened the first store in what is now Wilsonville and it remains one of the town's most important businesses today. The first post office was established in 1869 and until 1908 it was called Clintonville. The name "Wilsonville" was chosen because General James A. Wilson had been stationed here during World War I and he used its location for military exercises before returning to America. According to historical records, early settlers in the area included John Swanton who built a cabin near present-day downtown Wilsonville in 1875; George Wickersham who settled on an upland near by between 1876 and 1880; Hiram Bicknell who organization platted parcels of land south of downtown in 1888; Ezra Pinegar who settled east of downtown on ranch land around 1890; and Caryl Emerson which started upriver from present-day Happy Valley about 1899. In 1907, gold was discovered at Siuslaw River but no settlement occurred because there were not enough people to exploit it commercially or build hotels/resorts based on the gold resource potential that had been discovered nearby (Moses Lake). However, due to this discovery many people flocked into the area searching for new opportunities so over time more than a hundred small settlements were founded throughout Deschutes County by miners seeking their fortunes away from civilization while living under canvas tents or huts made out of split logs with four sides meeting at an intersection creating an open air marketplace known as "the square." In 1871, the first post office in Wilsonville was established. In 1912, the first telephone line was installed in Wilsonville. In 1916, the first community hall was built in Wilsonville. The town of Wilsonville was founded on December 1, 1920 by Harry Kapp and his wife Lillie. The first mayor of Wilsonville was Wm. H. Schmidt. On July 8, 1928, a fire destroyed much of the downtown business district and killed four people including Mayor Schmidt. The town rebuilt quickly with key support from private donations andeventually became profitable. In 1954, the name change to Portland when it merged with nearby Vancouver
