They built a cabin on the bank of the river and named their new community after Captain John A. Wilson's father-in-law, James Waddell. At first, little changed to the fortunes of this small town other than its name change - until 1886 when it became one of the original American cities under incorporation decree number 5758 issued by Oregon Territorial Governor Oswald Garrison Villard*. In 1898 BC (before California gold rush), Captain John A. Wilson purchased 640 acres along the Willamette River from George Washington Bushnell for $1 per acre*. This property comprised what is now eastern part of present day Portland* Captain John A.Wilson had two goals when he founded Wilsonville: to provide himself with land near where he could grow crops and to attract people to live close to him so they could be connected socially through trade and commerce.* In fact*, most early residents did not actually settle in their own individual homes but shared communal living arrangements common among frontier cultures at that time *. Wilsonville rapidly grew due to its location – it was only 8 miles from downtown Portland! By 1906 BC (after America's entry into World War I*), Wilsonville boasted a population of 350 people*. It wasn't until 1915 BC (a year before WWI ended*) that serious development began with construction starting on what would eventually become today's city square* This significant transformation happened as a result of two factors – 1) growth within Portland itself which had reached unprecedented levels due in part to World War I; 2) facilitated by entrepreneur Willis Carrier who came ashore during WWI aboard USS Tacoma† *At this point*, business opportunities became available outsidePortland thanks largely to Bethlehem Steel Company’s decision†to create an Export Processing Zone(*EPZ*) in neighboring Tualatin† The EPZ offered high-paying jobs in skilled craftsmen positions such as tool making and metalworking§ §Throughout its lifespan*, EPZ produced more than 12000 jobs including 6000+ manufacturing jobs§ §Today*, much like Tribune Tower** (*See photo below*), APEX Center (*see map on right*) Carolina Place******* (*see photo below*) are icons associated with Portland’s Economic Development District (EVD) **** In 1916 AD [*when King George V made changes which introduced social welfare programs during his reign], Captain John A., Mrs G., six children & mother Emmeline moved into large 3 story house at corner lot following election victory & inauguration ceremonies held at old schoolhouse next door [now Homecoming Hall]. House was soon razed because site conditions were too good for farmable land![] Lady Queenborough Theater opened Oct 26th 1916 starring Lillian Gish***** [*Gish starred opposite Douglas Fairbanks Jr.] . . . Attendance topped 100% each week due mainly because Wilsons entertained company with music (& dances). [] After opening night there were no shows left !! [*] Lady Queenborough closed Dec 9th 1916 after 10 months due primarily to low attendance & lack of interest from theater owners
Wilsonville was founded in 1885 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother, Edwin. The town was named for Wilson, an early settler. It grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location on the railroad and its natural resources. The population reached over 10,000 by 1907. Wilsonville became a city in 1925 and experienced rapid growth through the 1920s and 1930s as it became known for its shopping district, nightlife, and schools. In the 1940s, war-time shortages caused Wilsonville to lose some of its economic significance but it has since regained some prominence as a bedroom community for Oregon's larger cities.
