The name was given to the community by General George Armstrong Custer during his 1876 visit to Oregon as part of his Oregon-California expedition. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Linn were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1810, when they camped on the east side of the Willamette River. A few weeks later, they discovered Lake Pend Oreille while exploring near present-day Salem. In 1865, about two-thirds of all sections within Multnomah County were organized into townships under Commissioners Order No. 9: Beaverton Township (now known as Northwest Portland), Hood River Township (now known as Troutdale), Tillamook Township (now known as Vancouver), and West Linn Township (now known as Beaverton). On July 17, 1865 – three days before Oregon became a state – commissioners ordered township meetings throughoutMultnomah County to decide whether or not to form a new county with its current boundaries including most of present day Portland; westsideresidential areas would be included within Tillamook and Vancouver Townships only if those areas voted Yes on July 24th; if residents did not want their homes included within Multnomah County limits then they would have until November 15th to leave their townships or joinPortland County; any property other than residential real estate which was not registered with commissioners prior to May 1st would remain unincorporated until it was registered with commissioners no later than December 15th regardless of whether or not it voted in favor of forming another county! On West Linn, Oregon's eastern border, the city of Redmond is located. Redmond was founded in 1851 by pioneers James and Jane Addams as a small farming community on the east banks of the Willamette River. In 1872, the town became the county seat of Multnomah County. The population of Redmond reached 100,000 in 1920 and grew to over 200,000 by 1940. It was during this time that Redmond began to become known as a center for technology research and development. In 1955, Microsoft HQ moved from Seattle to Redmond.
