The history of West Linn, Oregon is a long and complex one. It began with the arrival of Europeans in 1847, when Captain John C. Frémont observed the beautiful valley from his wagon train near present-day Bend, Oregon. Frémont wanted to find a place to build a winter headquarters for his new expedition into the Cascade Mountains, and he decided on the area around what is now West Linn. In 1868, The Daily Herald published an article about how James Wickersham had built a sawmill on the Beaver Creek River in what is now Beaverton. This started the construction of mills in West Linn and other nearby towns. By 1870, there were over 20 mills in operation in town. In 1872, Portland was founded as the first city in Oregon andWest Linn became its second city. In 1907, Northwest Steel Corporation was founded in West Linn and soon began producing steel products such as dams, bridges and pipes. The company grew quickly and by 1920 it employed over 1,000 people including 200 engineers working on various projects throughout Oregon and Washington state. In 1941, NWSC merged with United States Steel corporation to form United States Steel Corporation (USSC). USSC continued production of steel products until 1989 when it purchased two other steel companies; Alcoa Incorporated (Alcoa) and Bethlehem Steel Company (Bethlehem). These purchases created United States Steel Corporation -the largest privately held U SSteel company-and led to job losses across many industries during the 1990s recession. Today physical evidence remaining from early European settlers can be found throughout town including building sites at 3rd & 5th Streets NW where Fort Vancouver Battalion Armory stood until 1865 when it was burned by Native Americans; 4th Ave SW between Market & Columbia streets which served as Ft Vancouver’s Town Hall from 1861 until 1862; Second Street NE between First Street & Morrison streets which served as Watch House from 1863 until 1865; Court House Square SE corner Butte Road NE between First Street & Morrison street which served as jail from 1872 until 1886; etc.. There are also numerous artifacts such as pioneer journals or tools left behind that help tell stories about life back then in this unique community located along historical riverside routes close to bigfoot country
West Linn, Oregon was founded by George Washington in 1847. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Willamette River and its access to timber and other resources. In 1862, West Linn became the capital of Oregon. In 1885, the city was renamed Portland after Mayor John A. Macdonald of Toronto, Canada.
