West Linn is located on the Willamette River about northwest of Salem. The river forms part of the border between Oregon and Washington state. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Linn were fur traders from Asia who sailed upriver from Russian Columbia in 1825, landing near present-day McMurdo Sound on July 11th of that year. They named their new discoveries "The Dalles" after General David Dixon's army had destroyed Fort Dalles on January 17th, 1826 when its commander, Captain John McLaughlin surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant as part of the Treaty of La Grande Traverse (1846). In 1853, Brigham Young founded a Mormon colony called Kimball City onshore nearPDX while he led his followers westward across Yaqui Pass into what is now Arizona Territory during their initial Utah settler exodus from Nauvoo Illinois. This area would be known as Kimball Valley today due to this early settlement by Mormons - but it was then mostly rural prairies with few buildings other than an old adobe jail used by local sheriff Doniphan until 1865.. West Linn was founded in 1853 by John C. Bean and his brother, David Bean. The city was named for John's wife, who bore him two sons - West Linn and East Linn - while he was serving as a military officer in India. The brothers started a flour mill in the town and began to sell goods from their store to residents of the surrounding villages. In 1855, they built a gristmill on the east bank of the Willamette River. The mill operated until 1907 when it burned down.
