Oregon's first optical store, the Oregon Glass Workshops, opened in 1916 in downtown Portland. The store was located on Second Avenue between West End and Pine Streets. In 1922, the store moved to its current location at 9th and Morrison streets and became known as the Oregon Optical Exchange. In 1951, the store changed its name to The Optic Shop and began selling telescopes and microscopes. The shop closed in 1978 but reopened in 1984 as The Optical Emporium. In 1990, The Optical Emporium merged with Pacific Science Center to form Oregon Scientific Incorporated. In 2006, Oregon Scientific Incorporated merged with Bemis Co., a company that manufactures optical products such as eyeglasses and contact lenses, to become BemisOptics Corporation In 2012 BemisOptICS Corporation was acquired by Lumentum Partners LP

West Linn, Oregon is a city in Clackamas County, Oregon, located on the west bank of the Willamette River. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now West Linn was Levi Parsons in 1851. He built a cabin on an existing farmstead and named it after his father-in-law, George Washington Morrison. The town began to form around this small community and by 1865 it had a population of 509 people. By 1882 it had reached 1,000 people and by 1907 it had reached 2,500 people. In 1945 the city limits were expanded to include parts of southern Oregon's Scappoose Valley as well as most of Anacortes County including Bellingham and Olympia counties to form Portland proper. Portland proper incorporated as a city on January 15, 1893 withgrowth rapid due to trade with nearby communities such as Salem and Eugene which became cities only 10 years earlier due to statehood issues during the previous administrations of Grover Cleveland and James G . Polk respectively. Businesses Expand rapidly; first flour mill opening in 1895 & over 100 businesses within 5 years Oregon Statehood comes into play with growing numbers seeking citizenship & incorporation; many new residents settle here As growth continued there were problems with water supplies that led to annexation by Multnomah County in 1912 creating much larger problem In 1939 West Linn annexed neighboring Coos Bay making it one large city

In 1938, American physicist and inventor Willis O. Russell developed the first practical telescope, the Hughes Acoustic electron microscope. In 1955, he invented the digital camera.

In 1847, the U.S. government surveyed the Oregon Territory and prepared a map of it. West Linn was included on this survey and was at that time called Indianola or Wacoona by the local Native Americans. It is now part of Salem, Oregon. The first European to visit West Linn was a fur trader named George Vancouver in 1819 who named it after his home town of Wacoona, Scotland. In 1827, John McLoughlin explored the area and found gold mines in what is now Butte County, but no other settlements were developed until 1849 when Charles Bent became an American settler in Independence Grove northwest of present-day Salem. The first store in town opened in 1850 under the name "Oregon General Store." In 1861, Bent organized what is today the Oregon Association which functioned as a trade association for early settlers and formed trails connecting their properties with those of other pioneers throughout Oregon Territory. Benton also attempted to establish a county seat for his new settlement but failed because there was not enough land available for it and he returned to Independence Grove in 1862 before he died two years later at age 70 from natural causes at his home near modern day Salem. West Linn remained unpopulated until 1865 whenchery operations began around present day Northwest Portland; this stimulated settlement that followed within 10 years around present day Salem which then became known as "the cultural Capital of Oregon." With its rich history dating back to its earliest days as an agricultural community, West Linn has been host to many important events including: The 1893 World's Fair; The Portland Expo '87; A Eugene O'Neill play staged here in 1948; And The Day Of The Dead National Folkloric Festival which took place October 25-November 2nd each year from 1974-2005 inclusive.) It should be noted that while some aspects of life here have changed over time (such as increased traffic due to Interstate 5), most aspects remain relatively unchanged since pioneer times such as: There are still more than 100 small farms scattered throughout the city limits; Schools continue to operate primarily through public funds rather than private enterprise; Most residents continue to participate actively both politically and economically via various organizations such as: homeowner associations, civic groups (including many historical societies) and professional groups such as: real estate agents/ brokers/ developers/builders/lawyers etc.; Many businesses located downtown include antique stores/booksstores/, music venues/. . . much like what exists today during Pioneer Days when merchants would open their doorsfitted with Indian Toy Cases (made from recycled materials recovered from old houses) displaying items bought fresh off the farm!

Oregon was admitted to the United States on January 3, 1846. The first U.S. Census in Oregon took place in 1850, and it included only residents of the city of Portland. In 1853, the Legislature passed a law allowing for a census of all Oregon residents, which was taken in 1857. In 1862, Oregon became part of the United States during the American Civil War as Confederate states. After the war ended, Oregon rejoined the Union and its legislature passed a bill ratifying statehood on July 4, 1868. The first statewide election in Oregon took place on November 2, 1870 and resulted in the election of Governor John Tilton as the first white male to hold that office in Oregon. The first female voter registered with Oregon was Ellen Browning on November 3rd; she later became one of two women elected to statewide office in Oregon (the other being Lulu Hellman). On October 14th, 1890 an earthquake struck near Salem killing more than 100 people and injuring thousands more; it is considered one of history's most devastating earthquakes.
