West Linn, Oregon is a city in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 24,653 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Clackamas County and one of the fastest-growing cities in Oregon. The area that now makes up West Linn was once part of what is now Portland. In 1847, local landowner Ebenezer Sibley donated 640 acres (247 hectares) to create what would become West Linn. On January 1, 1850, wagon train HH 5 arrived at the new town site from Fort Vancouver and called it "Portland". At first, only men were allowed to live there. This restriction lasted until 1853 when women were given equal rights with men. In 1862, Portland City Council decided to annex all of Clackamas County so that Portland could have more territory for its expansion into the west side of Hood River Valley. However, on November 15th of that year – just two weeks after annexation – an act by then-Governor John Kapp led to a Sioux uprising against Oregon's Mexican rule near present day Beaverton which left 10 people dead and 100 wounded including many Western settlers who had come looking for gold Rush sites in this region. On December 12th of 1862 Governor Kapp ordered all troops out of Oregon and closed down all banks in order to quell panic among traders and residents as news spread about Indian hostilities across much of North America; this event is often considered to be the start of the American Civil War (2). The following year saw heavy campaigning by both sides as General George Armstrong Custer tried unsuccessfully to cross through Kansas into Nebraska Territory on his way east during the American Civil War but did manage to reach Mount Rushmore National Monument before he was killed by Native Americans near South Dakota on July 25th 1865.
