The first permanent settler in what is now West Linn was Hiram Lewis in 1847. He and his wife Anna founded a small log cabin on a creek near present-day Marion Street and Silver Lake Boulevard. The Lewises were the first to grow crops there and raised chickens for their eggs. By 1860, they had built two more log cabins, one on each side of Cherry Creek. They named their community after nearby Mount Hood: Mount Hood East (now southwest corner of University Avenue and Northeast Sixth Street) and Mount Hood West (now northwest corner of Southeast Eighth Street). The Lewises were followed by other pioneers over the next few decades; many families from surrounding towns such as Dundee, La Grande, Goble, Crystal City, Sellwood, Clackamas Heights and Hillsboro arrived to farm in what became known as the "Oregon Trail" era. In 1873–1875 wagon trains carrying settlers crossed the Deschutes River at what is now Interstate 5 and traveled through what is now West Linn before reaching Portland; at that time it was an unincorporated community associated with Bendigo Junction east of Bendigo Base Camp on the Columbia River. This area became settled primarily by farmers who constructed stockades around their gardens to protect them from Indian raids during this period; westside current businesses such as Safeway are located near where Fort Vancouver would later be established in 1792. In 1881 Jens Jensen started trading goods between Portland and West Linn using a stagecoach called The Spirit which stopped at Snake Hill outside today's downtown westLinn about every other day along its route until 1889 when it switched to State Route 99W which ran parallel to US 97 south of town until 1915 when it changed back to SR 99W concurrent with I-5 southbound thru DowntownPortland A new store building has been erected at SE 7th Ave & NNW Stark St since 2006 across from Safeway USA
