The first permanent settler in what is now Portland was George Vancouver on October 14, 1823 when he founded an ferry landing on present-day NW 24th Avenue called "Vancouver's Ferry Landing." This site would later become known as Pioneer Square during the early 20th century when many businesses moved there from other parts of town because of its close proximity to riverboats that crossed at that spot. In 1847, railroad entrepreneur James Kinsman built one of the first steamboats navigable upriver from downtown Portland to Beaverton which helped spur development along riverfront near Klickitat Avenue and First Street between Northwest 15th Avenue and Northeast Seventh Avenue. By 1860 Portland had outgrown its small Ferry Landing so Kinsman began developing what would become today's Lombard Street into a fashionable commercial district with restaurants and shops lining each side of Market Street between First (now NE Sixth) Place and Second (now SW Morrison). In 1870 developers David Goodall, Alfred Waterhouse & Brothers purchased Kinsman's land east of Lombard where they erected what are today City Hall Building (left), State House (center) and Bank building (right). Over time more buildings were added including: Mercy Hospital (opened November 12, 1888), Western Union Telegraph Company building (1912), Pacific Telephone Company building(1916), Astoria Hotel(1920), Willamette Valley Chamber Of Commerce Building(1924),PDQ Food Service Headquarters Building(1981)) until it became one large blockshrine Blocksythe National Historical Park on April 16, 1985 when all but two buildings were razed following a fire that destroyed much business property within blocks boundaries
