Gun cleaning and preservation has been a tradition in the West Linn community for over 150 years. In 1896, Dr. George Hennepin organized a gun club in West Linn with the objective of providing “a place where all citizens can come to shoot." The first Annual Meeting of the Western Oregon Gun Club was held on May 8, 1896. At that meeting, it was decided that barrels should be cleaned every six months and any greasy or oily material removed from each barrel using a hot soapy water solution. Grease build-up on the rifling could cause accuracy problems and lead to malfunctions during shooting sessions. To prevent this problem, it was decided that all barrels should have their bore polished before they were fired. Many members of the club contributed their time to polishing these barrels including C F Crowley, E G Wells, W P Coxe, A F Bowers, J M Elliott and S R Wallace. In 1903, Dr. George Hennepin donated his pistol range adjacent to his home in West Linn for use by the Western Oregon Gun Club’s members. This range became known as “The Hennepin Range." The first pistols shot at this range were Winchester Model 1892’s which had recently become available in America after World War I restrictions were lifted by President Woodrow Wilson’s Executive Order 9296 (July 16th 1919). It is interesting to note that many of today's townspeople who grew up around West Linn remember going out to The Hennepin Range on Saturdays morning for target practice with shotguns provided by their fathers or grandfathers! In 1929-30, the old post office building located at 422 Main Street in downtownWestLinn was acquired by the Western Oregon Gun Club and used as their clubhouse until its demolition in 1978-79. During its occupancy as our clubhouse, we also acquired several rifles including an early 20th century Barnes & Noble rifle stock which had been stored indoors since 1938! In 1948-49 when new facilities were built within walking distance of our clubhouse on State Street (now renamed Broadway) we moved our indoor rifle range into this new facility which served us well until its demolition in 1984-85 due to flooding inside from heavy rains! WeFortunately enough though!, all of our firearms remain safe and sound inside our current building which has been designated as an historical landmark by city ordinance! From 1886 through 1949 there were three directors/ownerships for Western Oregon Gun Club: Dr George Hennepin (1896-1929), E G Wells (1929-1948), W P Coxe(1948-1953) while S R Wallace (1953-1978) ran things from 1978 until it disbanded 1978 because he did not want anyone else running things after he retired!!!
