In 1930, when Interstate 5 was constructed through the town center and other parts of Clackamas County it severed what had been an important transportation link between Beaverton and West Linn. Businesses along I-5 fled or were destroyed as a result; however, some people chose to stay and rebuild their businesses along Main Street which still exists today as "The heart of West Linn." On November 15th, 2008 a tornado touched down just south of town on Umatilla Rd near milepost 103 after touching down near Willamette University; no injuries were reported however damage was extensive with many homes completely destroyed or badly damaged with most trees downed throughout the village of around 20 homes now being reconstructed by volunteers using materials from around town including old cars that have been cut into pieces so that they can support adding columns for roofs etc... Local authorities estimated damage at $100KUSD with 1 million dollars being requested from insurance companies for replacement housing
