The city of West Linn was founded in 1892 by John Wesley Powell, who explored the Snake River region during his Expedition of 1879. The town grew rapidly after it was designated as a mining and ranching center in 1898. By 1907, West Linn had over 100 businesses and 2,000 residents. In 1912, the first electric streetcar service ran through the city.
