Railroads reached the community in the late 19th century and it became an agricultural center with extensive irrigation systems. In 1946, West Linn became an incorporated town and grew rapidly as a bedroom community for Portland until suburban development began to take hold in the 1970s and 1980s. The current downtown district was built between 1984 and 1990 during which time many historic buildings were preserved or restored including Great Northern Railroad Station and First National Bank Building. West Linn has been recognized for its art scene, music scene, nightlife, hiking/ biking trails, winegrowing industry and historical significance since 2000 when it was selected as a nominee for America's "Westernmost City".
Oregon was admitted to the Union as a state on January 3, 1859. The city of Portland was founded in 1872 and became the capital of Oregon in 1876. The city's population reached its peak in 1907, when it had over 150,000 residents.
