When the first Europeans set foot in what is now Oregon, they were met with a strange sight. There was a large and isolated forest that seemed to be completely alone in the world. The only other thing to be found there were some small villages perched on the edge of cliffs overlooking the ocean. But as time passed, people discovered that this seemingly-isolated forest could also offer them much potential for trade. The first Europeans to see this opportunity were French traders who landed onshore in 1788 and began trading with the local Indian tribes. From here, they learned about harvested fruit trees and animal hides that could be traded back and forth between France and India. This early success allowed European traders to build up an empire that extended from Linn County, Oregon all the way down to California. By 1850, these businesses had become so successful that they moved their headquarters permanently to West Linn where they continued operations until 1971 when they sold their business assets back to the county government. Today, you can still find some of these old businesses scattered around town – like The Post Office (originally built as a lumberyard) – or hidden inside abandoned warehouses near Interstate 5.
