The community began as a small farming village near its present location in 1876. In 1907 it became an influx point for settlers who had come to help create the Interstate 85 corridor south of Portland. West Linn grew rapidly after World War II as businesses developed around manufacturing and transportation jobs in nearby Beaumont and Corvallis. The population reached 10,000 by 1970 but has since declined modestly to 4,993 according to the 2000 census. Some of West Linn's most notable residents include Neil Armstrong (the first human to walk on Moon), Bill Gates (founder of Microsoft), Forest Service Chief Lew Rockwell and author Ken Kesey.

West Linn is a city in Lane County, Oregon, United States. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Lane County and the county seat of Lane County. The first European settler in what is now West Linn was J. D. Hutton on land granted to him by Colonel George Wright in 1847. By 1860, there were no less than twelve inhabitants living in four families of fifty-six people each when Captain John Cray arrived with his wagon train from California on November 12 of that year and discovered rich gold fields near present-day Salem. A party under Captain Cray's command explored the nearby Butte Hill area where they found a million dollars worth of gold nuggets including three "firearms" ( cannons ). On October 4, 1861, due to an erroneous report that gold had been found at Umpqua River Junction (), Captain Cray's party abandoned their supplies and set out for Umpqua River with only six men including Major General David Dixon as guide to strike it rich again and return home safe and sound (). They failed to find any gold but did find two old mines workings which they took over for themselves before finally returning home on December 16th after extended exploration eastward along the Rogue River valley (). In 1875 Hutton sold his interest in the town site to Eugene Fenton who laid out a grid square street plan which still exists today: Fourth Street south from river east; Fifth Avenue north from river west; Sixth Street south from river east; Eighth Avenue north from river west; Ninth Street between First and Second Avenues east/west). In 1905 Waddell & Beattie organized a company that built blocks of homes northeast of Fourth Street between Eighth Ave., Seventh Ave., First Ave., Broadway (now University Dr.), Third St., Estero Road (now Corbett Rd.), Southridge Drive (now Sandy Blvd.), Goldendale Drive (now Goodyear Bluff), Holladay Park off Holladay Rd., Arlington Way off Northridge Dr., Applewhite Way off Orchard Dr.). On February 3rd 1907 Waddell & Beattie donated all their improvements plus $1,000 cash to build a library building on property donated by Mrs. Anna Murchison (); this library building still stands today across First Ave.. In 1912 Pacific Bell Telephone Company erected its switching tower next door at 9th & Market Streets (). West Linn proper began developing within these boundaries with shops opened up around Second Ave.; Union House Hotel opened its doors on May 5th 1913 opposite Pacific Bell Tower (); Alameda Liquor Store followed soon thereafter occupying what is now Elmwood Place () On December 15th 1914 Western Union confirmed East Portland as the new coffee center for Oregon when they announced plans to build their new plant adjacent to Main Library (). This plant would eventually become known as West Seattle () . In 1916 Microsoft Corporation leased 500 acres southwest of downtown for $10 per acre ($140 per km²) making it one of the largest parcels ever leased in Oregon (). Microsoft became one of Northwest Industries Incorporated (), later renamed Intel Corporation (), until 1989 when it merged into AMDIncorporation(). Today part or all of Redmond School Districts campus lies within West Linn limits just northwest corneringMain St./Everett Rd.(formerly Everett Square)). With industry expanding rapidly outside Redmond's boundariesMicrosoft decided control over much or all technology production within Northwest Industries should be transferred back unto them so IntelCorp.)
In 1873, the first permanent settlement in what is now West Linn was made by Orson Welles and his family. Welles was a settler on the west side of the Willamette River. He founded a log cabin and began to grow crops. In the early 1800s, Oregon became a state, and well-to-do citizens moved to Oregon from states such as Massachusetts and New York. When California Becomes an Independent Country in 1848, many westerners decided to move eastward into what would become Oregon.
