Tualatin, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Grant County. The population was 19,903 at the 2010 census. Tualatin is home to several universities and research institutions, including Oregon Health & Science University, Portland State University, Oregon Tech University, and The Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The first Europeans to visit what is now Tualatin were Spanish explorers in 1802 who named it "San Francisco" after their flagship ship "Cristobal de la Rúa". A post office called Tualatin was established in 1872, and the city was incorporated as a borough on January 1st, 1898. In 1907 it became a city with a population of 506 people when the town of Coos Bay merged into Tualatin. Oregon's only forest outside of eastern Oregon was located near Tualatin until 1911 when logging operations began on Bend National Forest which resulted in large areas being destroyed by fire while also creating high levels of arsenic in water supplies for local residents. In 1917 an agreement was reached between the United States Forest Service and British Gas Ltd., owners of much of present-day Portland State University land that allowed for continued logging on private land adjacent to PSU without affecting university activities; this cleared much area for development which has resulted in increased rates for water usage at PSU since then. Tualatin, Oregon is a town located in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Multnomah County after Portland and it is also the sixth-largest city in Oregon. Tualatin was founded by John Wesley Evans in 1847 as a small farming community on the banks of the Willamette River. The community grew rapidly during World War II as part of the Pacific Northwest Defense Command's munitions production and storage sites for allies such as Japan and China. In 1951, Tualatin became an annex to Portland following a referendum vote by its citizens. In 1967, it merged with nearby Clackamas to formPortland into one citywide political entity. In 1971, Tualatin voters passed a measure authorizing annexation of adjacent Estacada Township to form a new city which would have eclipsed its predecessor's population size by almost two-thirds; however, this expansion idea was vetoed by then-mayor Tom McCallum due to concerns about potential development adjoining rural agricultural land that had been undeveloped for years.
