This area would become known as "The Tech District." Tualatin is a city in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. The population was 54,584 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Multnomah County and the second most populous municipality in Oregon after Portland. The town of Tualatin was founded by Spanish settlers on October 20, 1846 as Rancho del Ganges. The name "Tualatin" means "place where cattle are pastured." A post office called Tualatin was established in 1849, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1904. In 1861, John C. Frémont discovered gold near present-day Eugene while exploring forthe Central Pacific Railroad. After gold discoveries were made at Clearwater and Sperry Gulch near Fort Vancouver, Washington Territory (now Bend), prospectors from across the Western U.S., Canada, Mexico and Chile began arriving in search of rich mines throughout much of North America during the 1860s and 1870s. In 1876, George Pullman organized American Canoe Company to explore canals through what is now Oregon; he hoped to find water supplies for his shipping concerns along the Willamette River system. American Canoe Company's first trip upriver resulted in its discovery of large amounts of silver cinnabar which led to Pullman's investment becoming highly successful; he eventually sold American Canoe Company to Canadian interests for $15 million ($ when currency value is measured relative to purchasing power parity). In 1877 George Denny explored rapids on the Columbia River below Tualatin and became aware that another potential route for a transcontinental railroad bypassing Eugene would be via this river valley; he named this route The Denny Trail after him. Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) was founded as an agricultural college by anglo-American educators Anna Louise Strong and Charles Goodyear adjacent to Tualatin on May 6, 1865; OAC became an autonomous university with its own Board of Trustees on January 1st, 1888 following a legislative act passed by Congress authorising University status within state governments throughout Oregon not subject to federal jurisdiction absent separate legislation authorizing such status specifically within Multnomah County... On November 3rd 1889 OSU played its inaugural football game against Whitman College coached by Wm Henson who had just been hired as Head Coach at Whitman... OAC reached agreements with both Washington State Normal School (WSN) and Portland State Teachers' College (PSTC) securing affiliation with their respective states... OSU also reached agreement with Lane Community College establishing affiliations with these institutions through correspondence courses offered jointly under one roof thereby providing students from Lane Community College access to coursework commonly offered by more selective universities.... In 1916 OSA purchased land east of US Highway 101 south of present day Beaverton from Driggs family... This purchase increased local acreage available for university use from 2½ miles² upstreamto 10 miles² downstream making it possible for OSA-Portland State Agricultural Experiment Station (OSAPES)to numerous research projects involving plants grown on campus including: potato research program initiated by Professor Franz Kapp during 1915-16 investigations into declining yields due primarily to early frosts & lack of irrigation facilities; wheat production experiment commenced during 1916/17 aimed at increasing yieldsdue mostly to improved Husbandry techniques used & better horticultural practices Olaf Carlson directed while Assistant Professor agronomy department member David Jansen conducted experiments ... In 1847, the U.S. government acquired land in what is now Tualatin, Oregon from the British. At first it was used as a military base, and then for farming and eventually as a town. The first white people to live here were farmers who moved in around 1855. They started out small, but over time they grew larger and more prosperous than anyone else in the area. The town developed into an important center for trade and culture because of its location near the mouth of the Columbia River. The city began to grow rapidly after World War II when jobs opened up in aluminum production and other industries thanks to the growth of Portland. The population peaked at over 100,000 in 1960 but has since declined somewhat due to migration and economic hardship. Today, there are only a few thousand residents living in Tualatin proper while most of the rest of the city is spread out along its long waterfronts. Tualatin’s history is full of important moments that have shaped its today- including two world wars (the first occurred here), pioneers such as John Atherton (founder of Atherton Paper Company), Lewis & Clark Expedition leaders George Custer and James Halliday Jr., Gladys Knight And The Pipsqueaks, Neil Armstrong’s first steps on Mars, and many others. It’s also home to several interesting museums including Oregon Historical Society Museum which preserves artifacts from early Oregon settlers; Asian Art Museum which contains beautiful woodcarvings by Japanese artists; Northwest Folklife Center which showcases African American life during Reconstruction; and much more!
Tualatin was founded in 1852 by John McLoughlin and his brother, James. The McLoughlins were the first farmers in what is now Tualatin Valley. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1855, they married Maria Loring. The couple began to raise corn and wheat in their garden while also working as farmers. In 1865, they incorporated as a town and started trading with other towns in Oregon and around the country. In 1872, they built a post office and store on Main Street. By 1907, there were over 100 residents living in Tualatin. In 1917, the town became an incorporated city under City ordinance No. 3888-A
