In 1851, Tualatin was founded by James Irvine and his wife Elizabeth as a small trading post on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1863, Tualatin became the site of the first federally chartered town in Oregon when it became part of Multnomah County. The town's growth led to its incorporation as a city in 1907. In 1918, Multnomah County merged with Salem to form that state's third largest county. As Multnomah County grew more populous and developed new industries such as lumber and dairy production, Tualatin experienced rapid growth and reached its peak population count of over 100,000 in 1965. However, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, large-scale suburban development began to take hold in downtown Tualatin and other parts of the city; this contributed to declines in population rates until recent years.
