Tualatin, Oregon is a town in the Columbia River Gorge region of southeastern Oregon. The population was 9,987 as of 2010. It has been home to many businesses and organizations throughout its history. The first settler in Tualatin was James Cook who came overland from British Columbia in 1849. He named his new location "Cooktown" after Captain David Cook, leader of the Discovery Expedition which explored the Pacific Northwest in 1778-79. A post office was established at Cooktown in 1850, and growth began to occur around the post office. In 1854, John Cushman built a cabin on a hill overlooking Tualatin Creek for himself and his family. In 1861, Jotham Potter arrived with his family from San Francisco and named the town Potter Valley after Pottersville, Virginia where he had gone earlier that year on an exploring trip with Major General Ulysses S. Grant’s army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Potter valley became one of several places called by early settlers "Potterville." In 1872, William McKinney bought some land northwest of town for $5 per acre from George Washington Smith and erected a log cabin known as McKinney's Cabin which still stands today within sight of downtown Tualatin. McKinney started farming there shortly thereafter and soon developed into one of Oregon's leading farmers. He donated much of what is now downtown Tualatin to city government in 1907 when it merged with Portland along with other towns in Tillamook County to form Multnomah County effective January 1st, 1909. During World War II bombardments by Japanese forces killed most or all of the people living near Klamath Falls between December 7th 1941 and January 8th 1942; this area became known as " bombed out Tualatin." Many buildings were destroyed but according to oral tradition many people were able to return home eventually including James Cook who moved back into town after World War II ended because he could no longer farm due to damage done by The Bombing

Tualatin, Oregon was founded in 1859 by John C. Fremont and his brother-in-law, David Wilkinson. The town was originally named "Fremont" after John C. Fremont, the first U.S. president of California. The name was changed to honor General George Washington on July 4, 1860 due to the fact that Fremont had served as an aide to Washington during the War for Independence. In 1876, Tualatin became a city and adopted its current name of Portland
