In the early 1900s, Tualatin, Oregon was a small town with a measly population of around 1,000. Tualatin, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Clatsop County. The population was 54,814 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the Willamette River between Salem and Portland in the far north-central region of Oregon. The area now called Tualatin was first settled by people from British Columbia in 1847 and named for Arthur Tualatin who had been named captain commandant of HMS "Victoria" during her round-the-world voyage from England to Tahiti in 1841. The town site was chosen because it lay at an intersection where two rivers drained into the bay that forms Vancouver Island. In 1853, a post office was established at what is now downtown Tualatin with Wm Halsey as first mail carrier. In 1865, residents voted to incorporate as a city; it became one of the fifty United States cities on July 1, 1870. The prominent early families associated with Tualatin include those of pioneer developer James Kapp, manufacturer Harry Hayward (founder of American Can Co.), oilman George Stephenson (founder and CEO of British Petroleum), banker George Peabody (presidential candidate under Harding), lumber baron John Day (founder and owner of Pacific Lumber Company), brewer J.P.
