Tualatin, Oregon is a town located in the Columbia River Gorge region of northwestern Oregon. The name comes from the Nootka language word "talı" meaning "big river." At its peak in 1892, Tualatin had a population of 20,000 people. Today, the population is less than 5,000 people and most of the buildings are still standing. When first settled by Europeans in early nineteenth century, the area around Tualatin was part of what was called "The Dalles." The Dalles were an area along present-day Highway 97 that served as a crossing point for Native Americans and sheepherders traveling between the Columbia River and British Columbia. In 1826, surveyors traveled through this area and found that there was no good site for a settlement. John Day returned to Portland with his party on July 12, 1827 and discovered what would become Tualatin. He named it after his native state of Maine because he thought it would be more likely to get grants from those who controlled those areas than if it were named after someone from Oregon or Washington Territory (the then Territory of Oregon). The first post office in Tualatin was established on May 9, 1829. In November 1830, James Hargrave opened a store here which became one of the most successful businesses in town. By 1840, over 50 stores were operating in Tualatin. A millinery shop was also founded here in 1840 by Miss Fanny Wright; it operated until 1865 when it closed due to competition from other mills in town.

The site of present-day Tualatin was first settled by Native Americans in the mid-18th century as part of what is now Multnomah County. The area that later became Tualatin was part of a large Oregon country estate called Fort George which served as an army post during the Mexican–American War and also supplied troops for General John C. Fremont's march to California in 1849. After American independence was declared, settlers began to arrive in small numbers and build permanent homes around what would become Tualatin. In 1853, James McMillin donated land east of town to be used as a college campus; however, it did not come into use until 1957 when Multnomah State College opened its doors there. Today's downtown district was built mostly during the late 19th century through a combination of railroads and highway building projects; however, some buildings from earlier periods still stand including McKinnon Hotel (now known as Mt Hood Place), First National Bank Building (now CenturyLink Tower), Masonic Temple (now Cascade Towers apartments), and Episcopal Church (Now convention center).
