Tualatin, Oregon is a small town located in the Southeastern United States on the Oregon Coast. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of Multnomah County. The name Tualatin comes from the nearby Tualatin River and its tributaries. The first recorded mention of the area was in 1797 when Lt. John Marshall named it after his native country, Wales. The early pioneers who moved to this region were farmers and fishermen who began to settle here in 1851. In 1872, a group of men led by James Biddle bought 160 acres (60 ha) of land north of present-day downtown Tualatin and started to build a log cabin known as "Biddle's Cabin". They later renamed it "Biddle's House" after their leader and namesake. In 1903, mayor Dickson Thomson endowed a school for students in Tualatin which became one of the most popular schools in town with over 600 students graduating each year until its closure in 1978. Today there are only seven classes remaining at Biddle's School building which has been vacant for many years now due to decay and vandalism. In 1922, Linn Coffee Company opened up shop on Main Street near what is now University Avenue; it remains one of Portland’s longest running businesses with more than 100 years history! In 1951 the first restaurants opened up around town: Los Angeles' first Chinese restaurant called Dragon Inn & Canteen (now closed), Cook’s Inn (now closed), Red Lobster (closed down), Best Western Pavillion & Grill (now defunct). High-end hotels were built as well such as Travelodge on Wilson Boulevard between SW Morrison St./Waverly Ave., Regency Park Lodge across SW Morrison St./Waverly Ave., Holiday Inn Express right next door to University Avenue Shopping Center/University Plaza mall on SE Powell Blvd., Marriott Marquis Hotel just east side NW Thurston St./SE Stark St., Hilton Garden Inn across NW Thurston St./SE Stark St.; all have since closed or moved away from their original locations! Two other notable hotels that operated during this time period include Sam Boyd Guest Ranch Resort near present day Hood River Regional Airport* (* Closed down) and Willamette Valley Farmacy across NE McLoughlin Blvd.* (* Closed down). Today very few remnants remain of these five prominent businesses that once thrived in Tualatin – but their memories live on through local lore and stories!
