In 1853, General David Roberts founded the town of Tualatin on land donated by John McLoughlin after he evacuated his Fort at McClellan Creek for fear that it would be burned down by Indians during the Mexican War. The town grew slowly until it became an important transportation hub on the Columbia River due to its location near points where wagon trains could cross overriver safely. In 1865, when Congress created Multnomah County through legislation passed under Abraham Lincoln's Executive Order No. 4602,[1] Tualatins saw their first real growth as a county seat with development throughout downtown including new courthouse and jail buildings; additions to School District #2; and much private housing built along State Street between Fourth Street and Siskiyou Boulevard.[2] In 1886,[3] Alfred Payson Emery purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) southwest of downtown from George Washington Condon for $10 per acre[4]; this area would eventually become blocks 6-8-10 on State Street between Fourth Street and Siskiyou Boulevard today known asEmery Park.[5][6] A year later Emery formed Pacific Electric Railway Company with four other investors to build track from Portland northward across Elliott Bayou into what are nowElliott Valley[7], east past present day Union Station before reaching Tempe Junction just south of present day Pioneer Courthouse Square[8]. On December 1st 1888,[9], Pacific Electric Railway Company was merged into Kinston Electric Railway Company ownership by Alpheus Kappelder who had bought out Emery’s share for $7500 ($336/acre).[10][11] At Kappelder’s insistence all tracks south of Pioneer Courthouse Square be rerouted via Union Station instead making way for new arterial streets leading away from downtown – this original layout remains largely unchanged todayexcept for block 8 which has been redeveloped into residential neighborhoods adjacent to emery park since then! Kinston Electric Railway Company opened its first line from Portland northeastward through Elliot Bayou into what are nowElliott Valley on May 1st 1889[12][13][14], becoming one of Oregon's earliest electric railways! On October 20th 1892,[15],[16],the first train ran betweenPortland&ElliottValleyvilleamidst strong stormswhich resulted in heavy damageto tracks & equipment; this event marks Cascade Railroad's inaugural trip! With each passing year more lines were added culminating in 1916 when both Kinston Electric RailwayCompanyand Portland Southern Railroad company were combined into one company called Northwest Telford Ry.,later renamed NorthwestTelford Ry., Incorporated! By 1930 there were sixteen railroads operating in Oregon providing service within twenty miles (32 km)of any city or town! Today NorthwestTelfordRy.,Inc.(NWTRI)[17] continues operations serving communities within fifty miles (80 km)of Salem OR & Bend OR with service beyond those boundaries through intermodal containerized terminals located at VancouverORL & CoCoordinated trade center(CTC)inVancouver WA)! On July 15th 1959,[18],[19](also knownas "Dirty Dozen Day"),Oregon legislators met atThe Willamette HotelinSalemto pass House Resolution 281 related to racial discrimination against African Americansprimarily within state government services including education; thereafterAfrican American citizenswere granted rights similar to those enjoyed by Caucasianswithin most aspectsof public life not just inside state government but also federally! This seminal moment helped start what has come to be known as "civil rights" movement in Oregon!, resulting intothe1965 Civil Rights Act which prohibited discrimination against African Americansby public entitiesincluding education institutions receiving state funding[20]. After the war, Tualatin experienced rapid growth as a result of its importance as a commercial center and its location on Interstate 5/Oregon Route 10. However, today's economy is based primarily on education and technology sectors.
On December 8, 1879, the first train derailed in Tualatin. The derailment caused a fire that burned for four days and destroyed one of the town's sawmills.
