When Oregon was founded in 1859, it was a land of forests and mountains. However, by the early 1860s, the regions around Troutdale had become developed with small towns and farming villages. The first Holster Manufacturing Company was established in Troutdale in 1865, making holsters for farmers and traders. By 1870, the company had moved to its current location on Willamette Boulevard in Troutdale. In 1898, the company became a subsidiary of Colt Firearms Corporation. During World War II, Holster Manufacturing Company produced holsters for the US military. After the war, they continued to produce holsters until they were acquired by S&W Arms Corporation in 1966. At S&W Arms Corporation, production stopped in 1978 due to financial difficulties. In 1986, Holster Manufacturing Company merged with Therese & Edward's Gun Shop Ltd., which manufactured holsters until 1993 when it closed down as well. Today there is only one remaining holster manufacturing company active in Troutdale- that of Brownells Incorporated

The company made holsters for farmers and traders throughout Oregon and Western Washington before moving their operations to their current location on Willamette Boulevard near Portland in 1898. Colt Firearms Corporation purchasedHolster Manufacturing Company’s assets during World War II and continued production through 1946; however output ceased after this time because wartime Production restrictions placed upon firearms manufacturers led to difficult financial problems at Colt Firearms Corp.. Thereafter Brownells Incorporated assumed ownership of all remaining stock (though not production) of Colt Firearms Corp.'s Holster Manufacturers' Association products from 1946 until 1993 when it closed down due to economic troubles within that industry.
During this time period substantial amounts of equipment used for holster manufacturing such as presses/mashers/welders etc.) were all produced at various locations within Brownells Incorporated including:
